10 Lessons from #COVID19 that Nigeria Must Learn

The on-going Coronavirus pandemic is an experience humanity may never forget in terms of the psychological and mental trauma it has caused.

The fear of the virus has locked down the nation’s economy, rapidly changing our lives and social behavior as never before.
Experience they say is the best teacher.


Ignoring the warnings of the young Medical Doctor in #Wuhan who first identified the virus as a global threat, has taught China never to disparage or underestimate any medical warning, no matter it’s source.

The Second World War experience led to the creation of the 
@UN  &  @NATO to stop ethnic cleansing and unbridled territorial expansion. 

The genocide experience of Rwanda and the ethnic cleansing experience in Bosnia & Hertsegovina taught the world that diplomatic intervention works best when it is not only decisive, but timely.

The world is currently experiencing a lethal #COVID19 pandemic and Nigeria most likely may have the highest rate of infections in Africa.

Happily, Nigeria has risen up to this challenge by the decisive actions of the @Fmohnigeria, @NCDCgov & @followlasg to combat & contain the spread of the pandemic. The ongoing horrific experience of #COVID19 should teach some lessons that Nigeria must not miss, some of which are:


 *1. Reforming Border Control:* The first index case in Nigeria & majority of the infected people were from travelers into the country from heavily infected European countries through our air and sea ports.

This says a lot about the quality of entry protocols at our border posts both during crisis & peace times.

We must not leave this experience without putting a reform lens on our Aviation sector, 
@nigimmigration & 
@CustomsNG to ensure that they don’t constitute a threat to our National Security in all its ramifications including health as is evident in the case of #Ebola & now #Covid19.

These institutions need radical reforms, manpower reorientation and training in order for them to perform optimally.

*2. Improving Federal-State Govt Co-ordination:* That #COVID19 infection & casualties are in states reaffirms that this is where rubber meets the road, where people live, services demanded & where the impact of Federal or local policies translate into quality of life or lack of it.

Needless to say that our democracy & system of government needs to focus more on how to achieve & ensure sustained performance & competitiveness in states. 

The future of our nation lies in states that work for its citizens and a FG that enables that vision and facilitates its accomplishment by every constitutional and legal means available to it. 

Thus, Nigeria’s success or failure lies in the effective governance and management of States.

Alexander Pope in his timeless quote said “of the forms of government let fools contend, a nation well governed is well governed.” 

Emphasis on and promotion of governance in states is key to national success.

*3. Recognizing State Specific Needs:* The stats of #COVID19 experience in Nigeria typically shows that not all states are vulnerable in every crisis situation & among those affected that some states are more vulnerable than the other.

Just as in the case of #Ebola & currently #COVID19, it is evident that by virtue of its geography, economic significance and historical circumstances, #Lagos is a strategic state to Nigeria & remains both the proverbial golden goose as well a burden bearer for Nigeria.

Accounting for 25% of GDP, 70% of tax revenues, 60% of imports & 55% of air traffic, it’s so clear that it needs Federal fiscal support to continue to serve its circumstantial roles for the rest of the country.

The Presidential declaration that Lagos is the epicenter of #COVID19 & approval of N10bn grant to 
@followlasg
 to fight #CoronaVirusInNigeria is an existential reality that we often ignore. It is not always that federation support to states will be based on equality of states, which is often a “me too” calculation rather than strategic consideration.

The time to debate & consider special federal support for states in exceptional situations in the collective best interest of the country has come. The case of Lagos & FCT are so obvious and compelling.

*4. Avoiding Fiscal Shocks:* No reality check on our national & state budgeting system could be better than the cyclical & #COVID19 induced crash in crude oil price. The vulnerability of our national fiscal security to volatility in oil price has put a strain on 2020 budget for both Federal and State Governments.

That #COVID19 happened during revenue shortfalls & a threat of economic recession, teaches not only the need to save for the rainy day but also to anticipate that the rain could be torrential and come with devastating flood.

Let us imagine ancient Egypt without its agricultural revolution & the wisdom of strategic food reserve that saved Egypt in the 7 years of famine that ravaged the Middle East of that era. 

What is the lesson in this for our Agriculture after the wasteful oil years?

Where do we start after failing to accumulate reserves from oil to tide us over this famished season? 

Clearly we need greater grit and effort to address the challenging economic reform that lay ahead.

*5. Education & Healthcare, Critical to Life:* The search for treatment and anguish about the shortage of facilities underscores the critical nature of effective, functional public health and our preparation for emergencies.

The hunger for information on safety measures and observance of same underscore the need for an educated citizenry that understand the value and importance of public service information instructions and the need to obey them.

Have these experiences not taught that the provision of education and healthcare should be at the epicenter of our national development strategy? How much of our federation resources is currently allocated to these life changing provision of education and health?

It is a fortuitous happenstance that the process for the preparation of a medium term national development plan was about to commence before #COVID19 landed in our shores.

No reminder could have been more compelling than #COVID19, that access to quality education & healthcare are vital elements that this new plan must address for Nigeria. 

They are the foundation of our human capital & represent the bedrock for all other types of development.

*6. Strengthening the National Economic Council:* Never before has the NEC been as deliberative, open & engaging as it is currently under the hardworking leadership of @ProfOsinbajo
. Nonetheless, there is still a sub-optimization of its strategic role in the management of the nation’s economy. 

Future governments need to consider a functional & structural reform of the council to review and expand membership, give states more roles, promote competitiveness, peer review, innovation and allow more public participation through improved openness and media reporting of its monthly meetings.

*7. FCT as a Mayoralty:* The FCT is the Nation’s Capital & 2nd busiest entry point to the country has a population of about 3 million people & boasts of a GDP of $5.4 billion.

Similarly the FCT should emulate this citizen responsive orientation as is done in states, through  regularly briefing, broadcasting and issuing statements. 

The question now is how can we make the position of the administrator of FCT more accountable to its residents?

Perhaps it now become imperative of the FCT to emulate the footsteps of Washington DC , Addis Abba and Kigali to get itself an elected Mayor that is accountable to its residents.

*8. Love of Life is Universal:* #COVID19 pandemic exposed our fear of death, our ordinariness & equality of being & how dearly we covet life. 

Whether rich or poor, weak or powerful, Christian or Muslim, Northern of Southern, rural or urban, male or female, everyone chose to life.

The profile of infected people and the unfortunate casualties in Nigeria and globally speaks volumes and is a lesson to all of us.

*9. Ensuring institutionalization and sustainability:* In times of crisis and public emergency, philanthropists and institutions of goodwill always come to the aid of government as demonstrated in the case of #COVID19Nigeria.

So far close to N10bn has been raised for the 12-member Presidential Task Force for the control of #COVID19 headed by 
@BossMustaphaSGF.

Given the caliber of the members of the committee, it is not in doubt that they will ensure transparent accountability of its judicious use.

What is left to be addressed is what happens to the assets, infrastructure, unspent cash, from the donations and special intervention funds, when the committee’s work end. 

How do we ensure their safe custody and preservation for reuse in future?

Warehousing and institutionalizing the resources, experience, protocol, manpower including the database of volunteers within 
@NCDCgov
 could be one possible option. We must not loose the opportunity to institutionalize the experience and ensure sustainable response in the future.

Also supporting an obvious frontier state like Lagos and the FCT to build world class disaster response capabilities will certainly be a good idea. 

Building capacities of other states to the scale of their risk and vulnerability should be a medium term objective.

*10. Leadership & Communication:* The #COVID19 outbreak again brings back to the front burner the communication responsibility of leaders to the led. Across the nations of the world, in the specific case of President Buhari, presidential words in times of national crisis are words of potency with the power to navigate the ship of state towards resolution. This probably explains why there was sustained public demand for the President to address the nation and his speech was well received.

He should be commended & encouraged to do it more often. Failure or delay in communication during national crisis could erode public confidence in govt intentions. 

There is an essential part of the Presidency that calls for regular public engagement & timely communication.

As the resilient nation that we are, we will certainly over-power #COVID19, as we prevailed over the Nigerian Civil War, Economic Recession, Lassa Fever, Cholera, Ebola and so many other negative experiences.

The #COVID19 pandemic will pass and we all will be left to pick up the mess, therefore, we need build consensus on what needs to be sustained and what needs to change in our nation.

I hope we can debate these proposals and reach agreement on what is actionable by who, when and how.

Ekiti Amotekun Corps: Fayemi Names Members Of Governing Board For Ekiti State Security Network Agency(Amotekun Corps)



In a bid to ensure effective take off and efficient management of Ekiti State Security Network, the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has approved the appointment of members of the Governing Board of the Ekiti State Security Network Agency (AMOTEKUN Corps).

They are: 
i) Mr. Akin Aregbesola - Chairman
ii) Brig. General Joe Komolafe (rtd)- Corps Commander
iii) Dr. (Mrs) B.J Akin-Obasola -        Board Member
iv) Mr. Joel Idowu Ajayi            -        Board Member
v) Major Fatai Fakorede ( Rtd) -         Board Member 

The Governor also approved the appointment of Honourable Justice Cornelius Akintayo (rtd) as Chairman, Independent Amotekun Complaints Board.

The appointments take immediate effect.


FA Cup final pencilled in for August 8 with Wembley showpiece to end season as part of Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’

The resumed 2019/20 football season could end on August 8 with the FA Cup final pencilled in to take place on that date as the final match of the campaign.


Project Restart‘, the Premier League’s proposal to resume football after the coronavirus pandemic, would see the remaining 92 top-flight matches played ahead of the FA Cup final on August 8.

Eight teams remain in the world’s oldest cup competition, which was suspended before any of the four quarter-finals had taken place.


According to the Daily Mail, a midweek August 5 date is also being considered by the Football Association as they attempt to create a schedule for the remainder of the season.

The report adds that, due to the ‘Project Restart’ idea of playing every remaining match at neutral venues, all seven FA Cup games – including the semi-finals and final – will be played at Wembley.

Reigning FA Cup holders Man City remain in this season’s competition, along with Leicester, Chelsea, Newcastle, Sheffield United, Arsenal, Norwich and Manchester United.


The quarter-finals were due to be played on March 21 and 22, but they were postponed a week prior when all English football was suspended due to COVID-19.

The burial ceremony of late Emir of Rano was attended by less than 20 people

President Buhari’s media aide, Bashir Ahmad has countered a viral video in which some people were seen struggling to touch the corpse of an “unidentified person” at a burial ceremony. 

Some social media users had alleged that the video was from the burial ceremony of the late Emir of Rano, who died yesterday after being hospitalized after an undisclosed ailment. 

Bashir Ahmad who is an indigene of Kano State, countered the claim by stating that the late monarch of one of the newly created Emirates in the state was buried inside his Palace few hours after he died. 


The Presidential aide further disclosed that a Rano Emirate official also told him that the burial ceremony was attended by less than 20 people. 

He tweeted; 

The remains of late Emir of Rano buried inside his Palace approximately an hour ago, with less than 20 people attended the burial, but a fake video of thousands people has been trending throughout the day, purported to be his burial, it was not, Rano Emirate official told me.

Breaking: Jarman Kano, Prof Isa Hashim is dead

Another top traditional leader in Kano state, Prof. Isa Hashim who was a senior Counsellor in Kano Emirate Council, is dead

Prof. Isa Hashim who was until his death the Jarman Kano died on Sunday morning after a brief.

A family source, Ibrahim Aliyu told reporters that the 86 year old traditional title holder died as the health deteriorated, following the deaths of some of his childhood friends in quick succession.

Isa Hashim, a Professor of Political Science was a senior lecturer with Bayero University Kano (BUK) where he taught for many years before his retirement.

BREAKING: Emir of Kaura Namoda dies at 71

The Emir of Kaura Namoda,Ahmad Muhammad Asha also known as Sarkin Kiyawan Kaura Namoda has died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 71.
His  younger brother,  Abdulkarim Ahmad Asha, the Dan Jekan  Kaura Namoda told Daily Trust that the Emir had battled diabetes and hypertension fora long time.

“He spent like four days in his palace responding to treatment when the illnesses struck again. Later he was taken to Yariman Bakura Specialists Hospital where he died after three days of admission.”

“He worked as Director of Finance and Treasurer in many local government areas of the state including Kaura Namoda, Gusau and Maru before he was appointed as Emir in 2004”

“He is survived by three wives and 11 children among his children is Sanusi Muhammad Asha of the Nigerian Army currently serving in Maiduguri, Borno state.”

“Preparation for his funeral rite are underway and he will be buried in his home town of Kaura Namoda according to Islamic rite,” Abdulkarim said.
