Tribunal upholds Yahaya Bello’s election

The Kogi Election Petition Tribunal has dismissed the petition of Mr. Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenging the election of Governor Yahaya Bello of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wada was challenging the election of Bello in the Nov. 16, 2019 governorship election in Kogi.

Wada, in his petition, alleged that the election was marred with violence and other irregularities including corrupt practices.

Delivering the majority judgment, Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Kashim Kaigama, dismissed Wada’s petition on the grounds that it was lacking in merit.

The tribunal held that the evidence of some of the witnesses was contradictory and amounted to documentary hearsay.
The tribunal further awarded a cost of N500,000 to be paid by each petitioner to each of the respondents.

However, a member of the tribunal, Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele, disagreed with the judgment.

In his dissenting judgment, Ovbiagele held that Bello was not the duly elected governor of Kogi.

“I hereby nullify the election of the Bello and make an order that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conduct fresh elections within three months from today.

Paying Governors, Speakers pension is illegal, anti-people – Uzodimma

The Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma has accented to a Bill repealing the law that created pension allowances and gratuities to former Governors, Deputy Governors, Speakers and Deputy Speakers.

Speaking after accenting to the Bill at Sam Mbakwe the Exco Chambers, Government House, Owerri on Friday, the Governor noted that the law has become necessary because the it runs contrary to the 1999 constitution as amended, which stipulates that a pensioner must have worked for at least 10years and must be up to 45 years of age.

Governor Uzodimma noted: “Apart from the inconsistency of such a law to the provisions of the grundnorm, which is the Constitution of 1999 (as amended), this has led for a very long time a precedence that does not encourage diligence and prudence in service delivery.’’

"It is noteworthy that I am supposed to benefit from this law when I leave office as governor. Yet I called for its repeal. This should leave no one in doubt that I am acting in the best interest of our state and our people. I believe that those of us who have had the privilege of occupying exalted positions must be human enough to resist the temptation of feeding fat from the lean resources of the state at the expense of the people. We must know when to say enough is enough “

He regretted a situation where some of the beneficiaries of such payments equally get huge amount of money as salaries and allowances in other positions they occupied such as seating Senators or Members of the House of Representatives.

While thanking the Imo State House of Assembly for rising to the occasion and embracing totally the desire of government to strengthen the internally generated revenue base of the State, Governor Uzodimma assured of his commitment and desire to grow an economy that will stand the test of time.

Addressing newsmen at the end of the exercise, the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Chiji Collins informed that they presented two Bills for the Governor’s accent: the Bill on Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and Bill on the repeal of Pensions and Gratuity.

Collins said that the Bill on Pensions and Gratuity has long been repealed in many States of the Federation when it was discovered to run contrary to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

The Bill on Imo State University of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, the Speaker explained, is to ensure that the University is moved to where it belongs: the Imo State College of Agriculture Umuagwo where the National Universities Commission (NUC) visited for accreditation and not Aboh Mbaise as people are clamouring.

Present at the signing of the Bill to repeal the Law on Pensions, Allowances and Gratuities include the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prof. Placid Njoku; the Deputy Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Amara Iwuanyanwu; the Majority Leader, Uche Ogbuagu and other members of Imo State House of Assembly, as well as some members of the State expanded Executive Council.

MERCY- By - Erelu Bisi Fayemi

*MERCY*

                                                           * Bisi
Adeleye-Fayemi*

The baby girl is so beautiful. With her eyes closed and a blanket keeping her warm, she looks like an angel. I was asked to give her a name. I named her Anuoluwa – God’s Mercy. Mercy. That is what she has received. Anyone staring at this lovely bundle of joy would never have imagined what she looked like the week before. She had been found not more than a few hours old, with her umbilical cord still attached. She was covered in blood and dirt. She had been left as naked as she had been born, with nothing to cover her. Mercy. That is the only thing that stood between her being eaten by stray dogs or rodents who would have been attracted by the smell of blood. The desperate soul who abandoned her baby has not been found. People rained all kinds of curses on the mother who abandoned her. Efforts were made to find her to no avail. I pointed out that perhaps it was for the best. The mother could have strangled her first before abandoning her. By leaving her alive, in her own way, she showed mercy. Mercy will go to someone who is ready, able and willing to provide her with the love and protection that she needs. Hopefully it will be a very long time till she gets to know (if ever) the story of how she came into the world. This happened in Ekiti State last month.

Three days ago, there was another case in the State involving a little boy. Let us call him Moses. Moses was a one-year old boy found crying in a bush. Mercifully, he was rescued and taken to the palace of the King, who notified the police. The mother who abandoned him was found two days later. I will call her Mary. She had a sorry but familiar tale to tell. Grinding poverty. Abandonment. Frustration. Despair. The end result was the terrible decision to abandon her baby. Fortunately, Moses had a grandmother who cared. When Mary went back home to her mother without Moses, she claimed she had left him with one of her friends in a nearby town. Then a neighbor told Mama Mary that a one-year old baby had been found abandoned and the police were searching for the mother. Even though Mama Mary is willing to look after Moses even if his mother is unable to do so, it has been decided to keep Moses away from both of them for the time being, till when it can be ascertained that his life and well-being will not be at risk. This involves the necessary medical evaluations of his mother, addressing her psycho-social needs, her skills and livelihood options as well as her living arrangements and support systems.

Recently, a young woman called Adisa, was charged with killing her baby girl by drowning her in a bucket of water. I watched the video for clues behind this awful tragedy, beyond the words that were coming out of her mouth. I am not a medical professional, so it is not my place to make proclamations on her mental state. I however know enough to conclude that this is what happens when we allow young people, especially girls, to fall through the cracks. She conceived the baby out of a sexual assault. She did not want the baby. She formed no attachment to the baby. There were no ‘natural maternal instincts’. And that is why, when she decided to kill her baby, Adisa used the same merciless methods one would use to slaughter a chicken. Adisa’s fate will be decided by legal and medical authorities. Sadly, there are so many like her out there.

Mercy, Moses and Adisa’s dead baby girl have one thing in common. Their mothers were abandoned by their fathers. It is as if they did not exist beyond the procreation minute. It is not enough for us to blame young women driven to various degrees of insanity by poverty, helplessness and possible post-partum depression. We are familiar with the name-calling, mothers who abandon or even kill their children are described as evil, demonic, wicked, selfish, the list goes on. We are merciless in our judgement and condemnation. The negative epithets might be deserving, but who and where are the men who sleep with these mothers with reckless abandon and go on to abandon them? Are the fathers of these children itinerant, anonymous rapists? Are they local Lotharios who enticed the mothers with sweet talk and a pittance? Are they one-night stands? Are they deceitful married men who promised to marry them and then disappeared into thin air when they got the news of a baby on the way? When we find these mothers, who kill or abandon their children and subject them to whatever blame or punishment we think they deserve, we need to invest the same amount of energy in identifying the merciless fathers of these babies.

I have met many abandoned single mothers. I have helped them start over by going back to school, learning a skill or starting a business. There is never any ‘Father’ in the picture. Only poor and disillusioned grandmothers and Aunties who have love to give but not much more. Many don’t even have the luxury of any support system whatsoever. We should take a step back from our righteous indignation and try and untangle the symptoms from the root causes. We need to listen to our children and wards and minimize their vulnerabilities. We need sex education in our homes and schools. Governments, civil society organisations and individuals should pay attention to the sexual and reproductive rights of women and adolescent girls and the intersections of violence, poverty and mental health. We should strengthen existing laws and sanctions or pass new ones on Abandonment of Minors. I also believe we need a much better social work architecture than what we have now at Federal and State levels. The sector is grossly under resourced and under skilled and needs investments in technology for case work tracking and tracing. We also need Social Workers who are well trained, competent and compassionate professionals, with a grounding in social justice and human rights. It would also be nice to have Save Havens like they do in the United States, programs where desperate mothers can safely leave their babies without endangering them. Men need to learn the importance of taking responsibility for their actions from an early age.  Women should be empowered enough to negotiate safe sex. Every time we discover an erring woman who has done the unthinkable to her child, we should summon an equal amount of anger to target the invisible and therefore invincible father.
No one knows tomorrow. The God who saved Mercy and Moses has plans for them. On their day of glory, some man might show up wanting to ‘claim his rights’ as a father. There are plenty of foolish people who will be ready with their pleas for forgiveness on such a day.

Just as I was finishing this, I came across the report of a woman in Osun State who left her son tied up in a sack for four days while she attended a ‘church program’. There is a video of her, dressed in her white garment church outfit, being pushed and prodded and shouted at by irate neighbours. Again, questions are being raised about her state of mind, and there is a long list of words to describe her.  Where are the fathers of these unfortunate children? Have they no mercy?

Father and son surrender to police after killing neighbour for allegedly sleeping with wife

•Family of deceased demands justice

A father and his son have surrendered themselves to the police in Nasarawa State after killing their neighbour.

Mr Henry Oboteh, a trado-medical doctor, who was said to be in his mid-50s, was killed by one Mr Collins, his son and his security guard on Wednesday, May 20, at Angwan Tiv in Masaka, for allegedly sleeping with his wife.

The Oboteh family want to see that justice is done.

The daughter of the victim, Mrs Priscilla Solomon, who spoke to Tribune Online at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) unit of the Nasarawa State police command said that the suspects confessed to killing her father after discovering that he was having an affair with the wife.

“There has been an issue of infidelity between my late father and Mr Collins’ wife for long. Two months ago, Mr Collins took my father to court and he was kept in custody for some weeks, but I am not aware if they were still having an affair,” she explained.

She said the night the incident happened, someone believed to be the suspect called her father on phone and some hours later the police at Masaka division called her younger brother to come to the station only for her to discover her father lying dead.

She said her late father a trado-medical doctor and the Collins have been family friends since 2006, but the relationship became sour when Collins accused her father of sleeping with his wife some years back.

Priscilla said all the family is after is for justice to prevail, because “no law allows anyone to take someone’s life no matter the gravity of the offence,” she said.

A police source told our Tribune Online that the suspect who confessed to the crime is alleging that he caught the deceased red-handed having sexual affairs with his wife on his matrimonial bed.

According to him, the wife escaped and his son engaged Mr Obateh in a fight and he killed him in self-defence.

He, thereafter, walked to Masaka Police Station and confessed to murdering his love rival, he added.

He said the body of the victim was moved to Uke General Hospital mortuary, even as the police continue with investigations.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nansel Rahmnan who confirmed the development to Nigerian Tribune said the suspects are in police custody, adding that the case will be thoroughly investigated and the culprits will be arraigned in court.

Facts are stubborn things by Femi Adesina

Next week, the Muhammadu Buhari administration would be exactly five years in office. Four full years of a first term, and one year accomplished in the second term of four years.

In five years, President Buhari has touched Nigeria in diverse ways, despite myriad of challenges; economic, security, political, social, and many more.

The fact sheet will be unfolded few days hence, but today, as build up to the anniversary season, let’s dwell on some unassailable truths that can never be swept away. As Sir Winston Churchill, former British Prime Minister said; “Truth is incontrovertible. Ignorance may deride it, panic may resent it, malice may destroy it, but there it is.”

The President and his team are steadily and painstakingly retooling Nigeria. Out of sheer and deliberate ignorance, some people deride it, saying we see nothing, we hear nothing. Yes. When you have become deliberately blind, you can see nothing, even when it is thrust before your very eyes. You won’t see it. When you have become willfully deaf, when it is noised to your hearing daily, you won’t hear.

Some other people do theirs out of panic. Shall it be said that what Napoleon couldn’t do, has been done by that simple, unassuming man from Daura? Can anything good come out of Nazareth? Daura of all places. That small place. Not a man from a major city. And he wants to be recorded in history as the man who turned Nigeria right side up. They resent it out of panic.

Yet some others operate out of malice. He is not of my ethnic stock. Nor of my religion, language, political party. Why must Nigeria work under him? It won’t happen. We won’t see anything, nor hear anything. In fact, he is doing nothing. The country is even worse off than he met it five years ago.

There is a quote often attributed to John Adams, a former American President, though some people claim it was not original to him. It goes thus: “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

A number of times, I have written about a private journey I took to Onitsha, in Anambra State, last December. I was on the same flight with the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Highness Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe. When we landed at Asaba, and I had paid him royal courtesies, he asked me to give the thanks and appreciation of his people to the President on the Second Niger Bridge, currently under construction. For many years, many administrations had made unfulfilled political promises on the project.

“As you drive on the Niger Bridge, just look to your right, and you will see the new bridge coming up,” the revered monarch had said. “Please tell Mr President that we are very happy, and we thank him.”

I saw the Second Niger Bridge, and it kindled the joy kiln in my heart. But you know what? Some people pass on the 1965 Niger Bridge, see the new one in the works, and just pretend not to. Some others see it, and they are angry. Will this Daura man succeed where others have failed? But facts are stubborn things.

“Truth is incontrovertible. Ignorance may deride it, panic may resent it, malice may destroy it, but there it is.”

Have you seen the Owerri Interchange lately? It is the 1.6 kilometers bridge and 10.3 kilometers highway being built by Julius Berger, at Onitsha/Owerri road, Obosi junction. It will lead to the Second Nigeria Bridge.

In March, before the COVID-19 pandemic caused national emergency and halted the project, Works and Housing Minister, Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) visited. Very impressive. Now, here’s the news:

As part of the Phase 1 of the easing of lockdown occasioned by Coronavirus in the country, work is restarting on 53 infrastructure projects in 26 states, across the country. Despite the crash in revenue due to the collapse of oil prices in the international market, 11 contractors have been mobilized back to site in 26 states.
And the Owerri Interchange is one of the scenes of action.

The Second Niger Bridge is projected to be completed in the lifetime of this administration, in fact by February 2022. The man from Daura will go into records as the person that did it, with Fashola as the midwife. Facts are stubborn things.
In Phase 2 of the easing of the lockdown, you know what will happen? The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) will roll out 92 repair works across 24 states in the country. That will be different from the 53 projects in 26 states. Nigeria will be one huge construction site, at a time the economy is down, and revenue has shrunk considerably. That is the hallmark of a government out to serve the people, come rain or shine. Minister Fashola says the objective “is to get all those depending on daily living back to work, when the COVID-19 is finally contained.”

Strides in agriculture will not stop. Nigeria is on the verge of food self-sufficiency. Rice, beans, maize, millet, all grains, we import none, unlike in the past. What if President Buhari had not invested in agriculture right from 2015? How would we have survived at a time like this? Where would we run to? We run to the sea, the sea would be boiling. We run to the bush, the bush would be burning. We run to the rocks, the rocks would be cracking. Where would we have run to? Yet some people say: we can’t even see what the government is doing. Yes, willfully blind people won’t see. But facts are stubborn things.

What of railway lines criss-crossing the country? Lagos to Ibadan is ready. Abuja to Kaduna had been in operation.Ibadan to Kano is in the works.

Roads? Lagos/Ibadan Expressway is 61% completed. Abuja/Kano is bursting forth. Enugu/Port Harcourt. And many others. In fact, there is a federal road project ongoing in almost every state in the country.

Airports. New terminals at Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt. Many others under construction
Solid minerals? Contribution to Federation Account In 2015 was N700 million. In 2016, it went up to N2 billion, and N5 billion in 2017. It hasn’t stopped growing since then.

We have a Social Investment Programme that is the biggest and most ambitious in Africa. President Buhari recently directed that those on the social security register be increased from 2.6 million households to 3.6 million. Yet, all that some people can do is pick holes. They forget that there was a time in recent history that the country didn’t have a social security register at all. They won’t even let the one that has been established grow.

Corruption is being fought to a standstill. The same with insecurity in different parts of the country. External reserves are growing at a time of economic crisis. Yet some people don’t see what the government is doing. But those who see, and hear, are full of appreciation.

True, facts are stubborn things. “Truth is incontrovertible. Ignorance may deride it, panic may resent it, malice may destroy it, but there it is.”

FG declares Monday, Tuesday public holidays

The Federal Government has declared Monday and Tuesday as public holidays to mark Eldi Fitri Celebration.

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in Abuja.

Aregbesola congratulated all Muslim faithful for successful completion of the Ramadan fast.

A statement by the Director of Press in the Ministry, Mohammed Manga, quoted Aregbesola as calling on Muslim faithful to replicate the life of kindness, love, tolerance, peace and good neighbourliness as exemplified by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).

The Minister however expressed his concern about the spate of ethnic conflicts that has resurfaced in some parts of Northern Nigeria in recent times.

He advised Nigerians to see themselves as a single entity and learn to tolerate one another despite their ethnic and religious differences.

Aregbesola further assured Nigerians that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari was fully committed to battling COVID-19.

While commending the security agencies for the successes so far recorded in the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency in the North East, he advised Nigerians to take responsibility against the spread of the COVID-19.

After successfully raising $1 million in an online fundraising campaign, former football star, Fred Oumar Kanoute is set to build first mosque in Spain’s city of Seville in over 700 years. The Frenchman with a Malian descend who played for Sevilla FC revealed this development on Tuesday.

“Thank you and may Allah reward for you for all those who participated in the campaign,” Kanoute’s tweet appreciating the participants of the year-long crowdfunding campaign reads. It was learnt that the project will also include the mosque and a cultural center for the Seville’s Muslims which would be the first of its kind in over 700 years.

Kanoute who converted to Islam at the age of 20 told Aljazeera that, when he arrived the city of Seville he found it difficult to locate a mosque.

“When I arrived there [Seville], it was very difficult to find a mosque. I had to ask people,” he said.

He said Seville has over 30,000 Muslim with a mix of Spanish converts, second-generation Spanish Muslims, and people from Algeria, Morocco, Senegal and Malian background.

Before this crowdfunding campaign, Kanoute had in 2007 bought prayer space in Seville that was at the brink of shutdown after hiring contract was set to expire, but the raised fund would provide the Muslims with a permanent and larger praying space in Seville.

Young banker commits suicide in Lagos, drops note for father, girlfriend

...Another young man shares suicidal tweets after he lost his job

A young man identified as Kelvin Rhima has committed suicide at Modinatu Street in Ogba area of Lagos State. The lifeless body of Kevin who works with a new generation bank was found dangling from a ceiling fan in his mini apartment by neighbours at about 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

It was gathered that neighbours became worried on Tuesday evening when they noticed that Kevin hasn’t been outside since morning. Unfortunately, when they looked through the window, they found his body hanging on the ceiling fan.

Immediately after the discovery, they invited policemen to break into the apartment. According to a neighbor, Barry Olarenwaju, “Kelvin was a calm person so we didn’t notice on time. When we didn’t see him outside on Tuesday morning, we felt that was his lifestyle, that he was sleeping inside, but when it was an evening we got worried because there was no padlock at his entrance to indicate that he had gone out.

“When we tried to open the door, it was locked from inside that was when we began to bang on the door. By the time we went to the window, we saw him dangling and his tongue sticking out. From the look of things it was obvious that it was on Monday he died because the body had begun to bloat”.

Another tenant in the building who spoke on the condition of anonymity said immediately we discovered the body, we raised the alarm, it was a battle before the police came to the scene to access the situation.

“We went to Area G on Tuesday night to inform them about the situation they asked us to go to Pen Cinema division, which we did. Ironically, when the police came, they wanted to detain all the tenants, we had to pay N2,000 each so that we won’t be implicated in a matter we don’t know anything about. After which they still abandoned the body with the excuse that the mortuary was filled up. They only snapped pictures.”

It was gathered that policemen from Pen-cinema who came to the compound to access the scene saw the suicide note that he wrote and addressed to his father and girlfriend.

Meanwhile, Nigerians on Twitter yesterday tried desperately to get through to a man, with the Twitter handle @EmmilyEmmanuel, who tweeted a suicidal note on the platform. Yesterday morning, the Twitter user said he is tired and cannot “push again”. He asked people to tell his mum that he loves her as he revealed his plans to take his life.

He wrote: “Death is knocking at my door. I will miss everyone and everything here. Twitter has been fun to me since I joined. I didn’t have the courage to push through last year. But I do now. If you are seeing this, tell my Mama, I Love her but I couldn’t push again.”

He added: “I was looking for a courage to do this a long time ago. I twitted here last year that I got a job. Guess what? I worked for one year but was paid for five months. Life was okay for me. Had a car I was using for bolt. The owner of the car took back the car and am back to square one.“

Twitter users have reached out to him but say he isn’t responding. Those who have his number say he’s not picking his calls. He’s also not replying to his DMs.

It would be recalled that a 50-year-old man, identified as Chukwudi Maduka committed suicide at Umuezu-Ore Umuana village in the Uhuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State. The Public Relations Officer of the Abia State police command, Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed this to newsmen in Umuahia on Tuesday.

Ogbonna said Maduka was found dead early on Monday morning in his one-room apartment.

The spokesman said the man did not leave a suicide note, adding that the command had commenced an investigation into the incident “to possibly unravel the reason for the suicide.”

Narrating the development, a resident of the area, Dave Maduakor, said Maduka set his apartment on fire before hanging himself, using the ceiling fan in the room. Maduakor said neighbours sensed danger when they noticed smoke coming out from the room of the deceased.

“When they tried to open the door, they noticed that it was locked from inside so they forced it open and found Maduka’s body hanging on the fan,” Maduakor said.

Man in Edo state allegedly hacks his cousin to death after discovering he had so much money in the bank (graphic photos)

A man simply identified as Coma, has been arrested by men of the Edo state police command for allegedly hacking his cousin, Lateef, to death in the Auchi area of Edo state.

A Facebook user, Sheik Aliu Mahmood, who initially shared the story online, said COMA got information that Lateef was recently paid N2 million from the sale of some parcel of land.

In a bid to steal the money, Coma killed his cousin, took his ATM card and was about transferring the money to his own account when he was apprehended.

''Lateef was killed by his cousin brother with name COMA. According to him, He killed Lateef to get access to his N2million he got from land sales, and eventually collected his ATM card which he already had the PIN."

"On Wednesday 13th may, Lateef was last seen with COMA on COMA's bike.
In search for Lateef, COMA was arrested the following day by Lateef's parents but he was released the same day as he claimed to have drop the boy at the ATM."

"Unknowingly to COMA, the parents of the deceased had already reported his account to Management of the bank."

"Today, He was about transferring the money from Lateef's account to his own account when the Bank alerted the parents. He was arrested there and has confessed to killing his cousin brother in order to gain his N2million land money.''
LIB contacted the state police command spokesperson, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident but had a slightly different version of what transpired.

''The suspect and the deceased person are cousins. The deceased bought a land from the suspect and paid him the sum of N250, 000.  The deceased person and the suspect being cousins, have been relating before to the extent that the deceased gave the suspect his ATM pin number. This shows the level of closeness."

"The suspect having the knowledge that the deceased had so much money in the bank, decided to lure him into the bush, infact to the particular land he bought from him."

"They got into the bush and he used a spanner to hit him by the neck region. The victim fell and he buried him in that same land.'' Nwabuzor said

The brother of the deceased was the one who reported the case to the police on May 15.

Nwabuzor said the suspect is currently in police custody and is being interrogated.

Pastor who laid hands on COVID-19 patients dies of virus

A Pastor, Frankline Ndifor, 39, who laid his hands on dozens of confirmed and suspected coronavirus sufferers is dead, according to Dailymail.co.uk

Dr Gaelle Nnanga, who was called to treat Ndifor after he started suffering severe respiratory difficulties a week after falling ill with the virus, said the pastor died ten minutes after treatment.

Ndifor, a candidate in Cameroon’s presidential election in 2018, claimed to cure COVID-19.

in previous weeks, sufferers had flocked to the Kingship International Ministries Church, founded by Ndifor, where he laid his hands on them and prayed for their healing.

His supporters called him a ‘prophet’ and blocked the entrance to his home in the capital city of Douala for eight hours as medical workers tried to retrieve Ndifor’s body on Saturday morning.

The Governor of the coastal region said a police force had to be deployed when supporters blocked the entrance to his home and claimed the pastor was on a spiritual retreat with God so he could not be buried.

They sang and prayed for his resurrection throughout the weekend. He was buried in front of the house on the day of his death.

Dozens of people knelt down on the ground outside Ndifor’s house in Cameroon as they prayed over the loss of a man who called himself a ‘prophet’.

Ndifor also donated buckets and soap to people in need and his last public outing was on April 20, when he went out to distribute facemasks.

Ndifor came seventh out of nine candidates in the 2018 presidential election with 23,687 votes.

There have been 3,529 confirmed cases of coronavirus, and 140 deaths so far in the central African state.

60-year-old kills 57-year-old wife 'for having affairs with another man'

A 60-year-old man, Yikatey Somatey, has been arrested for killing his wife at Gando near Nyanyema, a suburb of the Sawla-Tuna Kalba District of the Savannah region in Ghana after he accused her of having affairs with another man.

The suspect accused his wife, Bora Bonbiatey 57, of cheating on him by having affairs with another man in their community.

Information gathered by Ghanaweb, an online news medium in Ghana, indicated that the man lured his wife to the bush in the name of performing a family ritual.

While in the bush, he poured pepper in her face before using a machete to inflict multiple wounds on her, leading to her death.

He was then said to have disposed off the body at a nearby bush and absconded. He was however arrested a few hours later.

According to the Sawla District Police Commander, ASP Degraft Armah Adjei who confirmed the news to journalists, the woman’s uncle reported the incident to the police.

“When the police got there, the deceased was lying lifeless with multiple wounds on her head believed to be from cutlass.”

No plan to impeach Akeredolu over N4.3bn secret money – Ondo Assembly

Ondo State House of Assembly members on Tuesday denied media reports that it was plotting to remove Governor Rotimi Akeredolu from office over the recent discovery of a secret account containing N4 .3 bn state funds.

They said they have a good working relationship with the executive arm of the government, adding that the speculation was to cause disaffection between the two arms.

The funds were said to have been lodged by the state government in a secret Zenith Bank account for over 10 years.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olugbenga Omole, in a statement after plenary, denied reports that the House met on Monday to begin impeachment proceedings.

The statement said: “There was no plan to commence impeachment moves against Governor Akeredolu.

“The news making the rounds that the Speaker’s lodge was under siege is a hoax and the imagination of those behind it.

“The lodge was never under siege. The armed policemen sighted there were at some distance away and were there to maintain peace, law and order.

Omole explained that the issue of the N 4 .3 bn was discussed at the meeting, adding that all relevant documents relating to the funds should be submitted to the House Committee on Public Accounts and the Committee on Finance and Appropriation , respectively.

People with asthma 'shouldn't wear face masks', experts warn

People who have asthma or other lung conditions should not wear a face mask if it makes it more difficult to breathe, experts have warned.
The Government issued advice last week telling Brits to wear face masks where they can’t stay two metres away from other people to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Masks can help stop the spread of coronavirus – by catching droplets which infect other people – they may not stop the wearer from getting the virus, but prevents them passing it into the others.
Masks could make it ‘harder to breathe’
Asthma UK said: “For some people with asthma, wearing a face covering might not be easy. It could make it feel harder to breathe.

“The government has advised the people with respiratory conditions don’t need to wear face coverings – so if you are finding it hard, then don’t wear one.”

The Government guidance says: “If you can, wear a face covering in an enclosed space where social distancing isn’t possible and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

“This is most relevant for short periods indoors in crowded areas, for example, on public transport or in some shops.”
It adds: “Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 2 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. For example, primary age children unassisted, or those with respiratory conditions.”

For people who suffer from asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), cystic fibrosis, chronic bronchitis, emphysema or lung cancer, wearing masks can be particularly difficult.
Immunology and infectious diseases specialist at New York University Dr Purvi Parikh told the MailOnline: “Those with lung conditions are in a catch-22 because they probably need the mask more than the average person but it can be challenging to breathe.

“A tight mask on your face can make anyone have trouble breathing.

“I even get it when I’m treating my patients.”

She said warm weather could make it even more difficult.

“We’re approaching summer-time so it’s hot outside, and when you’re consistently breathing hot air on top of your own breath that can be quite uncomfortable.”

The Government has published a how-to guide to help people make their own facial coverings – and stresses people should not be buying medical grade masks needed by NHS staff and social care workers.

Dr Parikh said people who can wear masks comfortably – even if they have asthma or COPD – should do so where possible.

She said: “[Vulnerable] people should absolutely wear masks if they can.

Not only will it protect them but people with asthma or COPD may actually spread more of the virus because they’re coughing, sneezing and breathing harder than other people.” (Metro UK)

Welder Commits Suicide Over Inability To Pay N120,000 Debt

Sunday’s welding workshop in Olu-Odo road, Igbogbo, Ikorodu.

A man identified as Sunday Welder during the weekend committed suicide in his house in Ikorodu over his inability to deliver a N120,000 job he owed one of his customers.

“He (Sunday) has always told me that he would kill himself if he’s unable to pay the debt,” Osaze, an Okada part seller whose workshop is beside Sunday’s workshop said.

Sunday, a known welder in Olu-Odo area of Igbogbo, Ikorodu was discovered dead in his house in Awobo area of Igbogbo on Sunday evening.

Osaze said the deceased’s girlfriend, Embella, had gone to visit him but discovered the door to Sunday’s room was locked.

She reportedly asked Sunday’s neighbours of his whereabouts and was told that they saw the deceased going into his room and had not left since then.

Sunday’s neighbours afterwards reportedly made efforts to open the door when he was not responding to their calls and discovered that he had drunk a poisonous portion inside a small bottle.

Narrating the circumstances of the debt that led to Sunday’s death, Osaze said two people contracted Sunday to construct containers for them.

The first person, Osaze said, paid Sunday 96,000 while the other person paid N120,000 to the deceased welder.

Osaze explained that after the time given to Sunday had elapsed, the person who paid Sunday N96,000 for a container came to collect it but Sunday was unable to produce it.

“The customer returned another day and found the container that Sunday made for the person that paid N120,000 and carried it,” Osaze said, “Sunday has been unable to produce the N120,000 container to the owner.”

Sunday’s decision to drink the poisonous portion he took surprises Osaze who said the deceased has ready-made fabricated “Gates and doors worth over N300,000 in his shop.”

“He always told me that he would drink something and die to save himself of the stress,” Osaze said.

Sunday’s remains have been taken to at a mortuary in Ikorodu, our correspondent learnt.

Confirming the incident, spokesman to Lagos State Police Command Bala Elkana said, “there is a case of a young man found dead in his room in Igbogbo.”

Elkana said police officers discovered a bottle of “a substance suspected to be sniper” which is with the police for postmortem examination.

He, however, denied claims that the girl was arrested and kept in custody over Sunday’s death.

“No, the girlfriend is not in custody. She was not arrested. She has only been with the police for enquiry on the deceased,” Elkana told The Guardian. (The Guardian)

Enough Of Femi Fani-Kayode's Madness - By- Adam Abdullahi, PhD

By Adam Abdullahi, PhD

Before now, I had remain silent to all the irrational and lunatic comments of FFK on many prominent Nigerians. But now, he has jumped into a river he knows nothing about its depth i.e. History of Ilorin and the Appointment of Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari.
First, there wasn’t any Oba in Ilorin before the establishment of the Emirate in 1823/24. Although, Aare Afonja was the Generalissimo of the Oyo Empire and forth of his generation in Ilorin after Laderin, Pasin and Alugbin. It is a fact that the Oyo annexed Ilorin in the 17th century by Alaafin Ojigi to protect the Igbominas from the Nupes incursion. However, Ilorin had been in existence centuries before Oyo’s authority.

Femi, your lack of historical facts made you say Aare Afonja rebelled against Oyo. Now let me lecture you. The animosity started when Alaafin Aole became the King of the Oyo Empire. As it is the tradition to execute all Alaafin’s real or perceived enemies for his peaceful reign, King Aole was asked by his Chiefs the names of his enemies. The king first mentioned one Baale Apomu and the man was quickly killed. The Alaafin was asked further of the last person and he replied thus: “my last enemy is more formidable than me.” Surprised, the chiefs asked again, and the king said “Afonja in Ilorin.”

All of them alarmed and scared; because Afonja was the most power man in the entire oyo empire. Aole and his chiefs later came up with a grand plan to execute Afonja; but the generalissimo’s spy quickly ran to Ilorin and briefed him. This was the beginning of the crisis that later frustrated the king and made him to commit suicide. But before his death, he curse the entire Yoruba race and Afonja. The Oyo Mesi and other generals declared war against Afonja and he sought the help of his friend, Salih Ibn Janta a.k.a.  Alimi; and together they embarked on a defensive war against Oyo… end of class.

FFK also demonstrated his historical naivety by saying Alimi killed Afonja and all his children. The class continues… Femi, the crisis that led to the death of Afonja was not between him and his friend, Alimi, but between Afonja and the slave soldiers who were rampaging the city after the wars. After the death of Alimi, there was a confrontation between Afonja and the slave soldiers which led to the death of the generalissimo. There are two points to be noted here my student. One, Alimi was no longer alive when the fight occurred between Afonja and the soldiers. Two, all Afonja’s children were not killed; and that is why there is a noble family of Magaji Aare in Ilorin till date.
On the issue of Masu Jamba, it’s like Femi doesn’t know its historical origin before opening his stinking mouth to talk. The name was giving to Ilorin by the Ibadans who closed the only root to the coast against Ilorin during the Ilorin-Ibadan wars as economic blockage to force Ilorin to surrender. Instead, Ilorin formed an alliance with Ijaye to navigated Abekuta and down to Eko (the coast). When the Ibadans discovered, they said “Masu Jamba mani awon Ilorin yi.” The name was as a result of Ilorin’s higher thinking capacity and diplomacy and not as a result of betrayal.

Now to the appointment of Prof. Ibrahim Agboola Gambari. Femi Fani-Kayode, you were talking about Islamisation and Fulanisation of Nigeria. Are you talking about the handwork of your election-rigging and selfish father who was a slave of the North during his lifetime? So, you are not insulting the global citizen, Prof. Gambari, but your late father. The demise of late CoS, Abba Kyari, left a vacuum in the government and the President exercised his power and appointed a trustworthy, competent and resourceful man in Prof. Gambari and you, once again, ignited your madness sense to talk evil about an international public servant and lecturer of highest repute who your father is not qualified to clean his shoes.

Femi, I am not surprised because this your show of shame shows that you are not a bastard but a true son of your father. It was your father that taught you how not to be responsible and the trick of stealing from public treasury. Baba iya to bi omo buruku.  When President Obasanjo thought he should future young people in his Administration and appointed you as the Minister of Aviation, what did you do? You stole the country dry plus the money laundry of 2015. I can’t wait to see justice been served on your corruption case in court. The country needs those monies to build hospitals and roads in your village.

Femi, enough of your madness. If you need help, I can introduce you to a Counselor friend of mine and I will pay the bill. Or if is a psychiatric hospital, there is a famous one in Lagos where you can be treated. I have decided to be taking you and others like you to cleaners anytime you show any sign of madness.

Least I forget, let me remind you of the song of betrayal that the Yoruba people sang for your father declaring him as a black sheep “Fani-Kayode jegbese ote!, Fani-kayode Jegbese ote…..” If you are not careful your own song is under composition; Omo osan tinko pompo ba iya e.
